Work started on the city’s castle in the thirteenth century, although the bulk of the building wasn’t completed until the early fourteenth century. An internal dispute led to much of the structure being damaged during a revolt in 1454 against the Teutonic order, with the Knights agreeing to leave. To avoid the Knights from returning, the authorities decided to destroy the rest of the castle.
Although the site of the castle was used over the centuries, with new structures added, much of what can be seen now is from the 1960s. There isn’t much left of the original castle today, but there is a multi-room downstairs area which has an interesting video (which has English subtitles) about the history of the castle and the Knights. Another part of the castle complex is what is known as the dansker, which was effectively the former toilet block, reached by an elevated corridor from the main part of the castle.
A visit to the castle isn’t likely to take more than around an hour, but it’s an important part of the city’s history and is worth seeing. Most of the information boards are in English, but there are a few which haven’t yet been translated.
There is an admission charge of 10zl for adults and 6zl for concessions and the castle is open from 10.00 until 17.45 every day of the week.
