STAROTORUŃSKA GATE

Address: Droga Starotoruńska, 87-100

This gate (Brama Starotoruńska) is no longer standing, although some fragments remain and there’s an information board at the site where it was once located. The gate was first constructed during the first part of the fourteenth century and it was the only exit from Toruń which led to the west. A six-storey barbican was added to the gate in the fifteenth century and defensive mechanisms such as the facility to pour boiling water on the heads of anyone trying to attack the city were also incorporated. The barbican was destroyed during the siege on the city by the Swedes in 1703 and the remainder of the gate was taken down in the 1880s.

The site of the gate is freely accessible at any time.
