This museum is located in what is thought to be the birthplace of the famous scientist and astronomer, Nicolaus Copernicus. There’s not entire certainty about whether Copernicus was born here, as his family owned two properties in Toruń, but it remains a fascinating fifteenth century tenement house.
There’s a one-way route throughout the two tenement buildings, which at times could be just a little better signed, covering the life of Copernicus and the period in which he lived. The museum was modernised in 2017 to give better language translation options and to increase the use of technology, although some of the screens are in need of repair. There also aren’t many original artefacts and exhibits in the museum, as most are copies, but there is plenty to see and the recreated period rooms are interesting.
A visit here is likely to take around an hour, as there are plenty of rooms to explore on numerous levels. There’s enough information about Copernicus to be able to get an understanding of the man and his work, with the building structure itself being packed with history. For an extra charge, there is also a room where various videos are shown and the staff can give further information about the options.
There is an admission charge of 15zl for adults and 11zl for concessions, with no entry fee on Wednesdays. The museum is closed on Mondays and opens at 10.00 on Tuesdays to Sundays, closing at 18.00 between May and September, and at 16.00 between October and April.
