CONVENT GATE (HOLY SPIRIT GATE)

Address: Ducha Świętego 1, 87-100

Also known as the Holy Spirit Gate or Monastery Gate (Brama Klasztorna), this Gothic style structure was first constructed during the fourteenth century. There was once a portcullis which could be lowered to prevent invasion, with the facility to pour boiling hot gruel through a hole in the gate to burn and scald any invader. The gate is named after the nearby Holy Spirit Church (a previous church, not the current building of the same name) and it was reconstructed during the nineteenth century. During the Second World War, the gate was also used as an air raid shelter which could hold up to around 100 people.

It’s always possible to walk freely through the gate, although the interior can’t be visited.
